FAQ

How is Spared. helping the climate crisis?
We think of each piece of waste that is Spared as: A conscious gesture. A proactive action. A commitment to our future.
Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions by reusing waste to make timeless design/objects and saving it from landfill. We are challenging throw away design and designing modern heirlooms with waste materials and longevity at heart.
-
What types of waste can be used?
We are on a mission to use as many types of waste as possible. So far, we have worked with: plastic, shells, cork, masonry, paper, food waste (coffee& egg shells), fishing nets and electrical wires BUT if you have waste that isn’t on this list, give us a shout as we love a challenge!
-
Do you make bespoke pieces?
All our pieces are bespoke and made to order. We do this to ensure that each piece is unique to you and your brand. Equally important to us is not creating any excess waste or having warehouses full of product.
-
Where are Spared. projects made?
All our pieces are proudly made in the UK.
-
Can you facilitate a beach clean-up for me?
Yes, we can! We’d love to. We have charities that we partner with and can arrange a beach clean-up for you and your teams.
-
What is is Plarix and Molelk made from?
Both Plarix and Molelk are composites made from gypsum and a water-based acrylic mixed with recycled materials. The material is solvent free with no VOC’s.
-
Where do you get the waste for Plarix and Molelk?
We source our plastics from UK companies who clean and chip recycled plastics and our shells from UK fishing industry and local restaurants. We have also been known to do beach clean ups and clean and chip the plastics ourselves.
-
What % of recycled material is in the final design?
As each commission is bespoke, the % varies greatly. For example, our 3-d printed waste objects can be up to 100% from waste and 100% recyclable. On the other hand, our core materials are generally comprised of between 30-50% waste.
-
What do you seal your designs with?
It very much depends on the use and location of the piece. As an example, our core materials are for indoor use only and we use an eco-coconut wax as standard but we alter this based on material use.
-
What thickness does your Plarix/Molelk come in?
The thickness required will be determined by many factors of the project and will be discussed and agreed early in the project. For an indication, our tabletops are generally 15-20mm thick.
-
How can Plarix and Molelk be used?
Our core material is versatile and can be used for furniture, retail plinths, tabletops, tiles, worktops, wall panels, decorative objects, & sculptural art but we can also use your waste or manufacturing by-product.
-
What colour options are there?
All our work is bespoke, so we can match any RAL or pantone colour. We can also etch, emboss, deboss and create patterns.
-
How do I maintain Plarix and Molelk?
As with any surface, there is a level of maintenance. We compare our material with a similar maintenance level as wood. Any stains should be wiped clean asap. Surfaces should be re-treated every 6-12 months
-
How much does it cost?
Each project is POA as each project is bespoke, but we can provide costs for tabletops and plinths for you in our core materials. Please contact hello@spared.eco
